Portia’s passion lies in bridging the generational gaps between older and younger mothers, and creating intergenerational networks of support. Her driving force is to create the change she wants to see in the world. To this end, Portia started a home gardening drive to equip and empower mothers to grow their own food using corporate food gardens. The crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 sped up aspects of this work, and in addition to distributing seedlings to families, Portia worked to get more than 2000 food parcels delivered to families in need.
Of her time as a fellow she says, “I can even encourage the next fellows that come, because I believe sometimes what we need to do in life is recognise opportunity when opportunity comes to you. I feel like I maximised on [the fellowship], because I feel I may not get another opportunity like this for a while, so I really jumped on it and I worked on myself, worked on my organisation and when COVID-19 came, I was like this is my time, I know exactly how I can help my community”.
