Tana Makgoka

Tana is passionate about birth. In her work as a doula, she has seen first-hand the importance of a mother’s birth experience and the impact a negative, traumatic birth experience can have on the global health of the mother-baby unit. Tana believes that with the right information, delivered carefully, mothers are best-equipped to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies. This is why she wants to find a way to make screening during pregnancy widely accessible and available, so that mothers whose babies are born with special needs have an opportunity to process their babies’ diagnoses and to mobilise the support they need.

Tana believes that “the making of a mother starts in pregnancy and so quality antenatal care and support could lead to better outcomes and better experiences for mothers and babies in South Africa”.
