Okay. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, Embrace friends: this year has got off to a bit of a brutal start. It’s only week 10 and I find myself fighting exhaustion and sternly talking myself out of bed. I find myself having to dig deeper than usual for a message that will encourage you all. The world is a difficult place right now, filled with horrific news. And is if that’s not enough, we must keep going with the business of raising our kids to be forces of good. That can be hard to do when the outside world and all its overwhelming sorrow crowds in.
If you’re fighting to see the good and kind woods for the terrifying and scary trees, look to the past. Not just for reminders of better times, but to remind yourself of how you’ve kept going. Look at you – putting one foot in front of the other, each day. Look at you – finding joy in hard days. Look at you – putting faith in the goodness of the world by participating in it – whether it’s registering to vote, marching on parliament or signing a petition. Look at you – reading this email or this text or this post and sending a quick shoutout to a friend.
The world doesn’t really need heroes. Not the super- outsize ones, anyway. It just needs us to keep putting one foot in front of another.
Check in with a fellow mom today and remind her she’s an everyday hero, she can do this, just one more foot in front of the other… and that you’re proud of her.
